What this site is for
Pet insurance in Australia is difficult to compare properly, and that is not an accident. Two policies can advertise the same $15,000 annual limit while paying out $4,000 differently on the same surgery, because the number that decides the outcome is buried in a sub-limit table on page 23 of the Product Disclosure Statement.
Comparison sites tend to surface the numbers that are easy to display. Annual limit, monthly premium, reimbursement percentage. Those are not the numbers that decide what you get back.
OzPetInsurance exists to surface the ones that do.
How we compare policies
Our rankings are built from five things, weighted in this order:
- Sub-limits by condition category. The single largest driver of unexpected out-of-pocket costs. A policy with no sub-limits can be worth more than one with a $10,000 higher annual limit.
- Annual limit structure. Whether limits reset annually or apply per condition for life. This matters enormously for chronic conditions.
- Reimbursement rate. Most Australian policies sit at 80%. Anything lower needs to be justified by a meaningfully cheaper premium.
- Waiting periods. Particularly for cruciate ligament conditions and hip dysplasia, where six month waits are standard and catch people out.
- Claims experience. Whether the insurer pays the vet directly, average turnaround, and how the pre-existing condition review process works in practice.
Commission rates do not enter the ranking. We check this by comparing our published order against what we would earn from each provider, and where those diverge, the ranking stays as published.
What we are not
We are not an insurer, a broker, or an authorised representative of any insurer. We do not hold an Australian Financial Services Licence, and we do not provide personal financial or insurance advice.
Everything on this site is general information. It does not account for your circumstances, your pet's health history, or your financial position. Whether a given policy suits you is a decision only you can make, and the Product Disclosure Statement is the document that governs it.
We also do not collect quote data, run a lead form, or pass your details to insurers. When you click through to a provider, you are on their site under their privacy policy, and we never see what you submit.
Where our data comes from
Cost and coverage figures on this site are compiled from:
- Provider Product Disclosure Statements, read directly rather than summarised from marketing pages
- PetSure Pet Health Monitor, the largest source of Australian pet claims data
- Published quote analysis from Compare the Market and Finder
- Australian veterinary pricing surveys and clinic published fee ranges
We date every article and note when figures were current. Insurance products change, sometimes without announcement, so we recheck the comparison tables periodically and update the date when we do.
If you find something out of date or wrong, we would rather know. Email us and we will correct it.
Editorial independence
We earn a referral fee when a reader clicks through to an insurer and takes out a policy. This is how the site is funded, and we explain it in detail on our How We Get Paid page.
Three commitments follow from that:
- We publish the negatives. Every provider review includes what does not work, not just what does.
- We publish the cases where cover is unlikely to pay off as readily as the cases where it is. Our guide on older dogs sets out where the numbers stop working.
- We do not accept payment for placement, ranking, or favourable coverage.

Get in touch
Corrections, questions, or a policy detail we have got wrong: [email protected]. We read everything.
We do not offer personal advice on which policy to buy, and we cannot help with a claim dispute against an insurer. For claim disputes, the Australian Financial Complaints Authority handles insurance complaints free of charge and its determinations bind the insurer.
